Choirs and Music Workshops
|
Music can unite people across denominational differences just as it can divide people within a Church. This page lists some opportunities for "pastoral musicians" - singers and instrumentalists who use music in the service of God and his people - to explore music from different traditions. Also listed here opportunities to sing music from different faith traditions.
The Fleet Singers - community choir which meets at Gospel Oak Methodist Church. The group, which happens to include a number of people from local churches, took part in the BBC's Mendelssohn Festival when about 60 choirs performed 'O for the Wings of a Dove' around the country one weekend. In June 2009 they joined children from Fleet School in a concert of Mendelssohn, Mozart, Byrd, Tallis and African jazz... In October 2010 they organised an open fun singing workshop for Classic FM's 123 Sing. And April 2011 joined other local choirs in a performance of pieces from Handel's Messiah. Not strictly for "pastoral musicians" but they do a fair bit of religious music and support church and local community ventures such as fundraising for the Hampstead Marie Curie Centre. Rehearsals Mondays 7.30 - 9.30pm £6 per session (1st free) payable if possible by term. The current term runs from 9 January – 26 March 2012 (1/2 term break 13/2). Details from pam.gilby@blueyonder.co.uk T: 020 7485 6990. Rock Around the Clock Spring concert Saturday 24 March 7pm in the hall at Gospel Oak Methodist Church. The programme includes popular songs and some solo items. £2 programme + collection for church funds. The choir is embarking on an exciting project for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee having commissioned Highgate composer Benjamin Till to write a new choral work. Diamond Jubilee Celebration will be on Saturday 16th June 2012 at Hampstead Town Hall. Benjamin Till is writing a piece especially for the choir to celebrate the Jubilee - it is based on memories of the last 60 years from the choir as well as weather phenomena in the area in each of the six decades. Local children will create a backdrop during the day and members of the public will be invited to learn several short pieces also on the day. The choir will learn the main work beforehand.
Rehearsals will probably start 26/3 at the end of this term and then, after Easter, Mondays 16/4 - 11/6.
Adjustments may need to be made for Bank Holiday Mondays.
