Organ Recitals at St Dominic's Priory
All concerts begin at 7.30pm. Admission free with retiring collection to cover expenses
and support musical activities at St Dominic's.
The Henry Willis organ in St. Dominic’s Priory was begun in 1869 and completed in time for the opening of the church in 1883. It is among the finest examples of his work to have remained unaltered to the present day, making it one of the most historically important instruments in the country. The tonal variety and impressive impact in the building is a hallmark of the finest craftsmanship – Willis himself thought this organ to be one of his best. The pitch is almost a semitone sharp, and the 35 speaking stops are spread over 3 manuals and pedals. A variety of actions are employed: mechanical for the Swell and Choir organs, Barker-lever for the Great, and pneumatic for the Pedal organ. Manders carried out a thorough cleaning and restoration in 1960, and again in 1993. The monthly recital series is a regular part of musical activities at St. Dominic’s, attracting performers and enthusiasts from around the world to enjoy this unique experience.
