Trade JusticeAlthough Trade Justice issues are extremely complex, one small thing we can do to make a big difference to the lives of small farmers in the developing world is to buy and promote Fairtrade products.
Be a trade hero The European Union (EU) is now pushing for unfair trade deals with over 100 countries. These deals will put big business above the interests of people in developing countries. Read the attached Fairtrade Foundation briefing and send a postcard to the EU Trade Commissioner letting her know that Europe needs a new approach to trade. Or send an email to Baroness Ashton, European Union Trade Commissioner, via the Traidcraft website encouraging her to listen to the concerns of developing countries in trade negotiations and not to push through unfair Economic Partnership Agreements. The Fairtrade label guarantees a better deal for producers in developing countries · Guarantees farmers’ organisations a fair and stable price for their products
· Guarantees extra income for farmers and plantation workers to improve their lives
· Guarantees greater respect for the environment
· Guarantees small farmers a stronger position in world markets
· Guarantees a closer link between consumers and producers
