Fairtrade in Camden Past Events

October 2008 London became Fairtrade Capital of the World and Camden held a Ghanaian evening in Camden Town Hall. See attached "Camden celebrates..." and review of the Ghanaian evening as well as pictures in the photo gallery.

In November 2008 Camden hosted the Fairtrade London Boroughs Workshop at the Town Hall. We looked in particular at how we might strengthen the Fairtrade campaign in schools and better engage with more diverse faith communities. It seems that there are "lots" of churches involved with Fairtrade but the Church of England and Roman Catholic Diocese are still having trouble gathering information from their churches as indeed am I here in Camden.

In summer 2008, the Camden Fairtrade Network ran an educational stall on chocolate at the Camden Green Fair where the Co-op sponsored a Fairtrade Tea Dance.

In July 2008 and 2009 Councillor Penny Abraham, chair of the Camden Fairtrade Network, ran a stall at the Somers Town Festival of Cultures in Chalton Street.

Also in July 2008 we took part in a Give and Take Day organised by Camden’s Recycling Team. They had already asked if we could run a Fairtrade stall at the first Give and Take Day at St Mary's Primrose Hill but it hadn’t been possible. This time Tom and Marion were able to set up a small table outside the hall in Waterlow Park, alongside recycling and composting information stalls, from where we sold chocolate and Geobars and distributed the London Fairtrade Guide.

In January 2009 Penny and Jane ran a very successful Fairtrade Tea/Coffee Stall at another Give and Take Day - people were asked to bring their own cups to minimise waste. And there've been a couple more Give and Take Days since.

In August 2008, we tried a new venture. Having heard there was to be an Islamic Mela (community festival) in Cromer Street WC1 we decided to apply for a stall. The organisers based at the Kings Cross Mosque welcomed the idea of a Fairtrade Stall and Marion Hill was able to gather a band of helpers (from a number of churches) for this Sunday in the middle of the holiday period and arrange for goods and information material from the Town Hall to be stored at the Kings Cross Methodist Church over the weekend. On this occasion we didn’t only promote products with the FAIRTRADE Mark but also a number of Traidcraft products like bangles and purses which had been made in Bangladesh and India.
