Fairtrade in churches
|
This, as far as we know, lists Churches in Camden that support Fairtrade to some degree whether simply serving FT tea/coffee after services or at meetings and events or selling Fairtrade products or running other special promotions.
However, information about churches is patchy and Christians Together in Camden, the Camden Fairtrade Network and denominational bodies like the Westminster Diocese and London Diocese would appreciate an update and re-affirmation of chruches involved in the Fairtrade Campaign.
Fairtrade Fortnight 2012 27 February - 11 March 2012 See Fairtrade Fortnight page In recent years Churches have organised Big Brew events, run Traidcraft stall on the Sundays, hosted Fairtrade displays and, in 2011, the Women's World Day of Prayer Service at Lumen featured Traidcraft products from Chile. This year we are being invited to Take a Step for Fairtrade. Please let the Camden Fairtrade Network know what Steps you will be taking. camdenfairtrade@googlemail.com
Regular stalls
Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church has a variety of Traidcraft sweets, snacks and groceries on sale in the church foyer Mon-Fri 10am – 4pm.
Hampstead Parish Church runs a Traidcraft stall
on the 1st Sunday of the month after the 10.30 service - about 11.45 for 1/2h or so.
Sales at St Aloysius Church every second Sunday of the month after every Mass.
Occasional Stalls are held in Blackfriar's Hall, St Dominic's Priory and St Mary's Primrose Hill. Other churches where there have been stalls over the last couple of years include Our Lady Help of Christians, St Martin's Vicar's Road, St Mary's Hampstead, St Peter's Belsize Park, St Thomas More and St Saviour's. Fairtrade Churches Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church, Hampstead Parish Church, Our Lady Help of Christians, St Aloysius, St Martin's Vicar's Road, St Mary's Hampstead, St Mary’s Primrose Hill and St Michael's Highgate. Is this list correct? Are there other churches with the certificate from the Fairtrade Foundation? The London Diocese and the Fairtrade Foundation and CTIC have each got different lists of C of E churches in Camden with certificates or engaged in obtaining them. According to the list held by the Westminster Justice and Peace Commission, St Thomas More at Swiss Cottage is also a Fairtrade church but...? St Michael's Highgate and St Pancras Old Church were represented at the London (C of E) Diocese Fairtrade Conference in January 2010. Marion Hill (RC) also attended this excellent day with keynote speaker John Bell of the Iona Community teaching us songs from around the world.
Several other churches hold occasional stalls or may use Fairtrade tea/coffee after services and at meetings but haven't yet made the commitment as a church. In some cases a Church has made a commitment to follow a Fairtrade policy agreed by their denominational organisation but hasn't applied for an individual certificate.
It would be good for the Fairtrade Campaign in Camden and London if all churches could clarify their Fairtrade status and those not already involved could consider making the basic commitment to use and promote Fairtrade products where possible.
Celebrate your church's commitment. Over 5,000 churches are now Fairtrade Churches nationwide and to celebrate this commitment Traidcraft has developed a Fair Trade Covenant Service. It is based on the famous prayer by John Wesley and has been adapted to give it a fair trade emphasis. Use it as part of a normal service or in a special service to celebrate your church's commitment to Fairtrade and fair trade in general. www.traidcraft.co.uk
Traidcraft celebrated its 30th Birthday in 2009. In a "then and now" presentation, available to Fair Traders, we are reminded that the organisation was founded as a Christian response to the scandal of poverty and this Christian perspective is still important in all they do. While we can rejoice that Fairtrade products are now widely available in our supermarkets, as Christians we should continue to support Traidcraft which is 100% dedicated to fighting poverty through trade.
Please let us know if you have a Traidcraft Fair Trader or Catering account. It would be good to be able to pool resources for special occasions or know where to refer people asking for help with stalls. See also Fairtrade products page. Your local Traidcraft Fair Trader is Marion Hill T: 020 7722 2965, E: ctic@blueyonder.co.uk.
