Fairtrade in Camden and beyond

With Camden a Fairtrade Borough since 2004 and London declared the world's largest Fairtrade City in October 2008, as well as all major Christian denominations supporting Fairtrade, it is important that we consider what we can do as individuals and churches to contribute to a fairer world through trade as well as aid and campaigning.

For more information on Fairtrade see the Camden Council website www.camden.gov.uk/fairtrade and Fairtrade Foundation www.fairtrade.org.uk

The Fairtrade pages on this website and the Camden Council website need updating and the Camden Fairtrade Network needs refreshing. Please join us in our AGM on Wednesday 2nd December  6pm at Camden Town Hall, Judd Street, opposite Kings Cross St Pancras stations. We will be reviewing & planning activities. If you are unable to come please send any comments and information to Marion of CTIC.

See separate page for some past events - stalls at street festivals, film shows and parties at Camden Town Hall, Give and Take Days, talks in schools, joining in London Fairtrade Campaign events.

We are always in need of volunteers. If you can help run Fairtrade stalls or give talks to schools or take part in conferences etc please let us know.

Over the summer we ran a stall at the
Bury Place Resident Association Flower Festival and Fun Day
in May in St George's Churchyard, Little Russell Street, WC1.

Camden Fairtrade Network ran a green cafe at the Give & Take
in June at St Eugene de Mazenod Primary School, Quex Road, NW6 4LS.

And members of the Camden Fairtrade Network ran stalls at the following events:
  • Camden Bangaldesh Mela Sun 5 July Regents Park
  • Festival of Cultures, Somerstown, Saturday 11 July Chalton Street
  • Kilburn Festival Sunday 12 July in Grange Park
  • Kings Cross County Show Saturday 18 July Coram's Field

At these festivals we distributed the London Fairtrade Guide, gave away free Divine chocolate and sold snacks and also some Traidcraft products like purses from Bangladesh. And we talked to a wide variety of people including our fellow-stall holders. We were encouraged by the number of children who had obviously learned about fairtrade at school.

My main job for the Camden Fairtrade Network is to update the Camden Fairtrade Directory and the Fairtrade pages on the Camden website. I would welcome any news of shops/cafes providing 2 or more products with the FAIRTADE Mark as well as news of any events and activities in churches or other community groups.
